About Unemployment Insurance and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance

During this trying time, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) is working around the clock to assist individuals like you affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance recently passed by the federal government, DOES is now able to expand Unemployment Insurance to more residents who are typically ineligible, including self-employed individuals, independent contractors, and gig workers. In addition to receiving regular UI benefits for up to 39 weeks, eligible applicants can claim a supplemental $600 per week through July due to the pandemic.

DOES has begun accepting UI/PUA applications. To learn more about PUA visit how to apply for unemployment benefits and other recovery resources available to individuals on coronavirus.dc.gov.
